question Purevision (Guest)
Posted: 12:11:17 am on 7/12/2002 Modified: Never

I read that Focus got an injunction stopping Bausch and Lomb from making Purevision because of a patent. Does that mean I will have to find a new lens?

Ciba (the manufacturer of Focus Night & Day) did obtain an injunction restricting the sale of Purevision because of a possible patent infringrement related to the material of the contact lens. That injunction only lasted two days before being lifted by another judge. However, the story is not over - the two companies are still in court trying to establish whether any patent infringement took place.

This afternoon Ciba has had the injunction re-instated. Bausch and Lomb are no longer able to manufacture or sell Purevision in the US. B&L immediately announced that they will shift the manufacture of the lens to Waterford, Ireland to enable them to service customers in Asia and Europe.

How is it possible to order pure vision contacts from overseas?

  Re: Purevision (Guest)

Unfortunately, it isnt.  They would be stopped by customs on import.  Suggest you see your eye doc and ask about Focus Night & Day - a very similar lens.

To date, the only U.S. patent which was ruled as infringed by B&L is the CIBA '943 Harvey patent which expires on 12/8/04. This means that at present, Pure Vision lenses should be available again in the U.S. by the end of 2004.

While there are four other CIBA patents being litigated, B&L has brought U.S. countersuits for invalidity of these CIBA patents and has obtained favorable decisions overseas the that the patented CIBA compositions were anticipated by a previous B&L patent.

So does anyone know what's going on with PureVision lenses today?

I volunteered for a "study" at my eye doctor's office.....he gave me two different kinds of lenses to sleep in and keep on for a week. When I came back and reported my results, he then sold me a 6 month supply of the Pure Vision lenses (2 boxes)

So what's the deal with that? I greatly enjoy the lenses, so I am hoping to keep them after I run out (around December)....will that be possible?

It's so frustrating to hear people suggest the CIBA Focus lenses as a replacement for Pure Vision.  I tried those 2 years ago with TERRIBLE results.  Interestingly enough, my eye doctor admitted that he has seen more people develop eye infections and irritations while using the Focus lenses than almost any other lenses.  It's unfortunate that the inferior lens is the only one available to us in this country now.  I'm in the process of trying to go the route of getting them from Canada until they are able to start manufacturing/distributing here again.  I just hope they will be available again by the end of the year.....

Why didn't you try to buy more lenses from your doctor???

Yay!  Good news finally.  I contacted Bausch and Lomb consumer affairs and they informed me that they have settled with CIBA and will be able to begin selling in the US again in April 2005!

Bausch and Lomb and CIBA Vision just announced a settlememnt to the global patent litigation.  It looks like the lenses will be available in the US starting in April 2005.  See the press release for more info.

I totally agree with you on the Focus Night and Day lenses. I've been wearing them since November and they are the worst lenses I've ever worn. I can barely stand to have them in for 8 hours, nevermind 24!! I wouldn't even consider it with these lenses. I went back to my eye doctor just a couple of days ago and she is ordering PureVision for me to try instead. She said a lot of people have trouble with the Focus lenses, and that if it were her office, she'd stock PureVision instead, not Focus.

I'm glad to hear that people are having better success with PureVision!

Give the Focus lenses a chance. I wear them too, and at first wanted to rip them out...felt like rocks in my eyes. I complained to my doc and he said to give it 3-5 days and then it will be fine. He said it was like when you buy a new pair of shoes. You need a small break in period. Fast forward to 7 months, and these lenses are the best most comfortable lenses I have ever worn.

Folks--I wore Purevision for over a year and now have worn the Focus Night and Day for over 2 years...the day I can go back to Purevision, I am switching.   There is no comparison, Focus is the most uncomfortable, annoying, and dry lens I have ever worn and I've been wearing lenses for over 20 years.    3-5 days doesn't make a difference...the only reason I am still wearing them is that I have an eye condition which requires a lens that allows more oxygen into the eye.   So for me, it is the Focus or glasses...but not for long...I'm counting the days till April!

In the meanwhile you can order PureVision by Bausch & Lomb from some Canadadian companies who will supply to US customers...Searh google for "PureVision by Bausch & Lomb from Canada".
(Sorry ACLens, I just couldn't wait 2-3 years and couldn't stand Focus which I tried for about a month. Sue CIBA if you want for lost business...)

hi I'm an optometrist and have far more confidence with the ciba lens than the purevision. are you aware that the ciba lens is availble in 2 different fittings. getting the best fitting is critical in asucessful outcome. It causes me less proplems than'coventional' lenses(dailies are of course the best).as a rough estimate 80% of trials convert sucessfully
I can only recomend the purevision to wear as
6 days out of 7

I have worn rigid gas perm lenses for 26 years, until my doctor finally allowed me to try the PureVision lenses last month.  While I had a couple of days of a little stinging and burning, by day 3 I was in love and completely forgot I had contacts in!  But those were just samples and he told me I would have to switch to Focus Day & Night, which I put in for the first time 3 days ago.  The first 24 hours were OK (not great), but by 36 hours I was in agony.  I could not handle any light, and my eyes were on fire and streaming tears even when I would close my eyes.  Even after taking them out it took 3 hours to feel "OK" again.  I have no glasses even close to my perscription (-8.50) so I sit here barely able to function in my own home, let alone go anywhere. My plans are to go to the doctor tomorrow, get my perscription and order PureVision from Canada.

Haha! Got my purevision perscription today , put em in and i am in heaven! These lens are a little wierd to get used to (since this is my second time wearing lens of any sort) but not as bad as the ****ty first brand i had (cant remember what brand they were but honestly they feel like sandpaper gainst the eyes).
These lens are all good, and if a total newbie can get used to having them in after 1 hr they cant be all bad
